Laughing Heirs
Directed by Max Ophüls
In this delightful romantic comedy set in the heart of Rhine River wine country, boyish Heinz Rühmann (The Man in Search of His Murderer) stars as a bachelor who stands to inherit the vineyards of Bockelmann champagne. But the inheritance comes with a caveat: he must abstain from any alcohol consumption for a full month—not an easy task when surrounded by some of Europe’s finest wineries. A boisterous celebration of the pleasures of German wine, Laughing Heirs offered American audiences of 1933 a welcome escape from Prohibition, and offers today’s viewers a fascinating view of the vineyards of pre-WWII Germany and France.
