While volunteering in the immediate aftermath of Haiti's devastating 2010 earthquake, Victoria Campbell encounters Gaston, a charming voodoo priest who's opened a small, much-needed medical clinic with the support of a foreign funder. Gaston becomes a local hero, a symbol of ingenuity in defiance of other failed relief efforts – and over three years, he also becomes Victoria's friend. That friendship thrives through hell and back, until an unexpected development causes Victoria to re-examine her entire experience in Haiti.
